Decarboxylation is a crucial step that activates the psychoactive compounds in cannabis. Skipping this step will result in non-psychoactive infusions. So if you want to make your own cannabis-infused butter, oil oder honey to use it with other recipes follow the instructions below.
Important Notes
Start with small amounts when consuming cannabis-infused products to gauge their effects. Always label your infused products clearly and keep them out of reach of children and pets.
1. Cannabis-Infused Butter (Cannabutter)

Ingredients:
- 250 grams unsalted butter
- 7-10 grams of decarboxylated cannabis (see decarboxylation step below)
- 250 ml water
Equipment:
- Baking sheet
- Saucepan
- Cheesecloth
- String or twist ties
- Glass jar with lid for storage
Procedure:
Once solid, drain any residual water and store the cannabutter in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
Decarboxylation:
Preheat your oven to 115°C.
Break cannabis into small pieces and spread evenly on a baking sheet.
Bake for 30-40 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes to ensure even heating. This process activates the THC.
Infusion:
In a saucepan, melt the butter with water over low heat.
Add the decarboxylated cannabis to the melted butter.
Maintain low heat and let the mixture simmer for 2-3 hours and don’t forget to stir occasionally. Ensure it doesn’t come to a full boil.
Straining:
Place a cheesecloth over a jar or container and secure it with string or twist ties.
Pour the mixture through the cheesecloth to strain out the plant material.
Allow the liquid to cool at room temperature. Lastly refrigerate until the butter solidifies.
